We start with an intake session of about an hour. You describe your wants and needs. We complete assessments to determine your areas of strength and challenges. Together with your coach you set goals for the coaching process. You define what success would feel like for you. A coach offers techniques, systems, education, a caring listening ear, experience, and accountability. Most clients meet weekly for an hour with the coach for 1-2 months. Then when strategies, habits and new technologies are in place, clients might meet for briefer check-ins weekly, with a full session every month or every 2 weeks.

Sessions can occur in -person or via video chat.

What is ExeCutive Dysfunction?

Do I have executive dysfunction?

While ADHD is one of the most common sources, brain injury, concussion, long Covid, stroke, cancer-related brain fog, mental health conditions, dementia and many other conditions can cause executive dysfunction.

People with executive dysfunction may have trouble with many tasks, including:

  • Planning: They may have difficulty planning projects, estimating how long tasks will take, or shifting plans when situations change. They may also have trouble visualizing the finished product or goal of a task.
  • Starting tasks: They may have trouble motivating themselves to start tasks that seem difficult or uninteresting. They may also have trouble getting started or initiating tasks.
  • Focusing: They may be very distractible or have trouble focusing on just one thing. They may also daydream or "space out" when they should be paying attention.
  • Switching tasks: They may struggle to move from one task to another or multitask.
  • Managing emotions: They may have trouble managing their emotions or impulses. They may also have trouble regulating their emotions, which can make their reactions seem out of proportion to others.
  • Remembering things: They may have short-term memory issues or lose important items.
  • Learning: They may have difficulty learning or processing new information, or learning from past consequences.

Other symptoms include:

  • Poor organizational skills
  • Difficulty developing a logical plan
  • Difficulty meeting deadlines
  • Being late to appointments, events, or social activities
  • Socially inappropriate behavior
  • Mentally rigid or inflexible

What does coaching look like for these problems?

  • Calendaring - Set it up and use it!
  • Phone reminders - Let your phone help you remember.
  • Plan-Do-Review-Modify - How to make plans and see how they worked.
  • Pomodoro Technique - Take breaks before you exhaust yourself mentally.
  • Prioritizing - Learn how to know what to do first.
  • Estimating - Realistically estimate how long tasks will take so you can get them done!
  • Addressing emotions (overwhelm, shame, anxiety)
  • Understanding what motivates us (and what doesn't.
  • Overcome all-or-nothing thinking.
  • Energy allocation and gathering - Understand physical, mental and emotional energies are like a bank account. Learn how to stay in the green.

Process

  • We start with an intake session with some interviewing where you tell the coach your concerns, needs and wants, some testing, measures and goal setting.
  • Follow up sessions in person or by video.
  • You might get what you need in as little as three sessions or you may choose more ongoing work once a week or once or twice a month.
